In honour of the passing of Fo Guang Shan founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, on 5 February 2023 at the age of 97, we have created this condolence page for our community to share their messages.
The Venerable Master has been a dedicated and inspirational leader in the Buddhist community. Throughout his life, he worked towards propagating Humanistic Buddhism and promoting peace, education, love and compassion across the world. His legacy continues to inspire millions to create a positive impact.
With a mind as vast and boundless as emptiness,
A body like an unbound boat that sails the ocean of Dharma.
What merit and virtue have I accomplished in this lifetime?

2023年2月5日，佛光山开山 上星下云大师，于庄严念佛声中，圆寂于佛光山传灯楼开山寮，享耆寿97岁。澳洲星云大师教育基金会特设立此网页，供大众追思缅怀。
大师一生弘扬人间佛教、建设佛光净土、利益群生。综观大师一生，秉持佛陀教法，提倡 “以文化弘扬佛法，以教育培养人才”，为教界树立典范，为世间带来光明。大师的慈心悲愿亦启发众人追随其脚步，为增进人类福祉做出贡献。

Encountering Humanistic Buddhism and having Venerable Master Hsing Yun as the lighthouse of my life is the biggest lottery I have even won. Though I haven’t got chance to meet Master in person and I am only one of the millions of the Buddha light devotees, in my heart he is indeed my “shifu”! Master had said, if we can have faith in ourselves, always have Humanistic Buddhism in our hearts, and meanwhile practice and propagate it, it will be the best way to remember him. Ok, shifu, we sure will do it!

BLESSED CONDOLENCES
When Assistant Professor Jack Chia from the NUS History Department shared the news of Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s passing on my social media feed, I took a moment to breathe and recollect my thoughts.
My first visit to Fo Guang Shan in Kao Hsiung, Taiwan ROC was in the late 1980s as a Junior College student and I remember feeling really quite awed by the temple grounds.
I bought a volume of the Venerable Master’s book that if I remember rightly was entitled 星云大师佛法讲言集. It was part of a huge series of teachings by him, comprising many volumes. I was impressed by how prolific he was.
I very much appreciate Venerable Master Venerable Master Hsing Yun for his vision of humanistic Buddhist education and for the opportunity of teaching at Nan Tien Institute more than a decade ago. He has certainly accomplished much for Buddhism and worked tirelessly for a more peaceful harmonious world.
Yesterday I visited Fo Guang Shan in Singapore where I now reside, and paid my respects in memory of the Venerable Master. As a tribute to him and everyone at Fo Guang Shan, I composed this haiku entitled “Mindfully”.
MINDFULLY
Gentle breeze
An auspicious figure
Stepping up.
Gentle smiles
Orchid blooms in my hand
Offering.
Teacher looks
Heart is full, gratitude
Bowing slow.
Receiving
A gift book of wisdom
Mindfully.
Returning
From peaceful Dharma field
Connection.

很感谢您把佛教发扬光大，使到刚学佛法的我得益。愿您乘愿再来，弘扬佛法！
乘愿再来，弘扬正法
去年开始参加《法华经》线上英文读书会，被妙光法师流利的英语吸引，意识到将东方的佛教传播到世界各地是多么需要学好英语啊！现在，我在爱尔兰交流学习，最近了解到佛光山已在全球170多个国家和地区建立道场，星云法师以“地球人”自居，而不是台湾人、中国人、亚洲人，大师做到了。
1月19日是世界宗教日，昨天我刚在网上看了在爱尔兰巴哈伊国家中心举办的主题为“ONE PEOPLE,ONE WORLD”的不同宗教间的对话与交流活动，今天我看了《人間佛教的領航者專題》一至五集，深深随喜赞叹星云法师所提倡的“人间佛教”正在全人类中实践这样的宗旨与理念。
对于星云法师的圆寂，我不想报以悲伤，而是想报以力量——发大愿，像大师一样永远走在“三好四给”的路上，自利利他，自度度他，福慧双修，饶益众生。
